Explosions in the Sky

The Earth is Not a Cold Dark Place

I first heard Explosions in the Sky when I say the movie Friday Night Lights. I looked them up later, and bought Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Die, Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Live Forever, probable a couple of years ago. At first, I like just small parts of the album, but over years, the more I listened, the more it grew on me.

I’ve just picked up The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place. It’s fantastic. buy it now.

Of the bands you’ve recommended to me; mainly Trans Am, Giant Sand and EitS, I play these fellows the most. I absolutely love this and your first and they get a TON of play from me.

I’ve been on a ‘All of the Sudden…” kick lately but ‘The Rescue’, the three John Peel tracks, ‘How Strange, Innocence’ and the ‘Friday Night Lights OST’ are all solid start to finish. I like to throw them on random and see what happens.

I was honestly considering going up to the Catskills to the overpriced and bloated ATP just to see them (Sonic Youth performs in NY every other week, The new Breeders stuff isn’t very good and I’ve seen them a ton and Iggy’s going to be doing a tour).

CAVEAT: the dynamics of the decibles are dangerous indeed. I’ve honestly been startled by tracks that I’ve heard repeatedly because they do the loud-quiet-loud thing so dramatically that the Pixies roll over in their graves.

There’s a gunshot in one of those tracks that makes me think of that scene in Monster’s ball, but then maybe it’s just another Texas connection.

I play them all the time too.

Is it the one with the Thin Red Line dialogue? That song’s great and I love how Those Who… has 3 minors and 3 major-y tracks. I enjoy the way they use emotional themes in place of lyrics to paint a picture.

The Rescue is neat because it’s Day One through Eight as tracks and each day is different, not to say each song wouldn’t be different but I guess the track titles give it a feeling of a journey. Also, it’s overall a very different sound for them.

Ya, “Have You Passed Through This Night”.

Re: Rescue – I had no idea what you were talking about, so I checked, and I was missing this. I’ve fixed that, and listening to it now. Thanks!

    Great so far.

I love the guitar sound they get – I’m a Fender guy, and their recordings are great examples of the Fender sound, both clean and dirty.
